Environmental Risk Mitigation Specialist

Mr. Buchanan is the Environmental Risk Mitigation Specialist of USI’s Environmental Risk Mitigation Group (USI-ERMG). USI-ERMG is the national environmental resource group for USI companies. As the name implies, ERMG’s focus is in determining our client’s business objectives and delivering strategic business solution to mitigate environmental risk and liability.

As a Vice President of the Environmental Risk Strategies Institute at the University of Houston, Mr. Buchanan is engaged in the development of specialized education services that incorporate aspects of business, science and technology in environmental law, toxicology, environmental science/technologies, exposure analysis, risk assessment, liability evaluation, risk financing, and mitigation methods to create strategic business solutions for environmental challenges and opportunities.

Mr. Buchanan has over ten years of experience in business management, marketing and negotiation as well as five years of experience in Environmental Risk Management/Mitigation.

Prior to USI-ERMG, Mr. Buchanan held the position of Environmental Underwriter for ACE Environmental Risk where he was responsible for underwriting environmental risk for site-specific pollution liability, contractors pollution liability and combined professional/contractors pollution liability product lines for an eleven state region including the Gulf Coast States and the states that boarder to the north and west.

Before becoming an underwriter, Mr. Buchanan worked with the International Institute of Environmental Risk Management (I2ERM), in association with Texas State University, where he developed a strong understanding of environmental liabilities derived from environmental law, property transactions, contractual obligations and facility operations. The Institute provides specialized services in the areas of environmental law, medicine, insurance, risk management and technology.

Mr. Buchanan continued to work with I2ERM as a guest speaker and program coordinator for the Environmental Risk Management (ERM) program. The ERM program provides nationally recognized and accredited professional curriculum and professional designation to the environmental industry.

Mr. Buchanan graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. He earned the professional designation of Environmental Risk Manager (ERM) from I2ERM, in association with Texas State University and continues his professional development through various classes at the University of Houston.
